Nita's Legacy

Nita's Legacy

Juanita (Nita) Crandall was the older sister of Jan Clarke,
who went to South High with my sister-in-law Barbara.
As a girl, Nita was disabled by polio but that did not stop
her from accomplishing much in her life. She maintained
a beautiful garden at the home on St. Mary’s Drive where
she lived with her sister Jan. Together, they were avid
quilters and did exceptional appliqué.

Jan gifted a number of Nita’s unfinished projects to Barbara
after Nita’s passing. This particular quilt top first went to
dear friend Carol Lindsay, who decided later that she would
not be completing it, and so it came to me. Nita had finished
all the piecing on the top but had only started the process of
rolling back and top-stitching down the many bias-edged
triangles that give the “blossom” effect to this quilt. My happy
contribution to this quilt was completing that work, making a
back, finding a custom quilter, and doing the binding.
