While making my “Barbed Wire” quilt, I took the extra step of sewing a second line on the half-square triangles. That left me with about a hundred leftover gray and black 2.5-inch half-squares. While listening to a good book, I casually sewed them up into 25 churn dash blocks, not having a bigger plan for them. When Don saw the blocks up on my design wall, he said they looked like Imperial TIE fighters. And then we both smiled, remembering how Star Wars-obsessed David, at age four, had called them “Imperial Typewriters” – can’t you just imagine all that clickity-clacking across the galaxy? Then that memory led me on a quest to find some vintage typewriter and font fabric to create a theme for a new favorite quilt that started out with me just playing idly with a handful of scraps.
